Prayers with Preschoolers

The girls and I teach preschool once a month at our church with two other fabulous ladies. The five of us have become a “well oiled machine”.

Before the preschoolers have their snack, I ask them a series of questions. They have gotten so used my questions they almost ask them with me.

1. “Who are we talking to, when we pray?” (I get a chorus of ‘GOD’)

2. “Where do our hands go? Are they touching our friends?” (In our lap.)

3. “Are our eyes looking around the room?” (No. Our eyes are closed.)

4. “What about our lips? Are we talking? (No. Our lips are zipped.)

I love my preschoolers. I enjoy every moment I get to interact with them. If my preschoolers understand the seriousness of prayer, why is it so hard for some adults. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard the phrase, “I’ll pray for you.” Or even the crazy amount of time I’ve said it myself as a form of comfort to someone in need.

Prayer is such an important part of the Christian faith and our relationship with our Creator. If we don’t communicate with someone there is no relationship.

When we go to the Lord in prayer, we are going to the One who spoke the world into existence. When we are “going through a storm” in life, we are talking to the One who created the winds. When we are praying for healing, we are asking the One who put air in our lungs to make us feel better.

“Lord, thank you for preschoolers who can teach this 40 year old a lesson.”
