I’ve just discovered what kind of parent I am. Well, what kind I want to be, based off of Disney Movie characters.
There are all kinds of parenting styles in this world and most are portrayed in Disney movies.
There is Jasmine’s dad, the Sultan, who is worrying about his daughter’s future and the path she will choose.
There is Bambi’s dad, The Great Prince, who is looked upon as a stern father, but in reality, is a dad who has many responsibilities and deer (people) who look to him for survival. (The busy working dad, who truly loves his kids, but has many responsibilities.)
Moana’s dad who’s own fear won’t allow his daughter to venture out into the wide world because of his own past.
Nemo’s dad, Marlin, who is so filled with his own fear that he won’t let Nemo out of his sight.
Mother Gothel, in Rapunzel, was just plain selfish.
King Triton, Ariel’s dad, wanted her to be so responsible he wasn’t letting her live her own life.
Bob Parr from the Incredibles, is unhappy in his own life, he sets out on his own adventure leaving his family behind.
Elinor, Merida’s mom, loves her kids dearly and Momma Bear comes out, quite literally, wanting the best for her daughter, but also forgetting to let Merida live her own life.
Sometimes our own fears and our past mistakes cause us forget that our kids need to live their own lives and make their own mistakes. We can’t push our wants and desires on them, when they are just now beginning to realize that they have their own wants and desires.
The parent I want to be is Winnie the Pooh. I think deep down Winnie the Pooh is a Grandparent. He enjoys the simple things in life, a red balloon, honey, (maybe sometimes a bit too much honey), and all he really wants is more time with Christopher Robin. He knows Christopher is going to leave one day and he just wants to enjoy every moment he can. His best days are “Today” and his favorite times are spent with his friends (family). Memories are made while they thought they were just having fun. “Doing nothing leads to the very best of something.”
Life is short, make it sweet, add a little honey.
